another point, if you are not using DHCP, then you have to include your gateway as your domain name resolver. e.g. 192.168.1.1 usually.
or use one of the opendns out there or optionally use 8.8.8.8 from google.

Reason for that is in the "/etc/nsswitch.conf" file. Should be at the hosts directive:
hosts: files dns

AND/OR another solution could be in the "/etc/resolv.conf" file. Nameservers are not listed.
nameserver x.x.x.x
nameserver x.x.x.x

@hexKermit Wrong. He's doing exactly what he should be doing. This is how you'd do it in real life. For me, I use a su -flc alias for everything because it's easier than modifying/building the sudoers file and it's just bad practice to have root be your default user. Remember Windows 95?
